Rotraut Pape
Sunday October 13th, we had a meeting and dinner with Rotraut Pape and she told us about the film class she teaches at HFG of Main, which is an art school. We got to see some film projects of students she has taught in the past. One that I found very fascinating is called In the End Before the Beginning. It had more of an intellectual approach and an intense feel with the sound. At the end of the story all the people shown are brought together. It is very well done with the effects and he used slow motion as well. Overall, it was a very enjoyable evening having dinner and learning about Pape and what are students have done with film.
Tacheles
Monday October 14th, we went to Tacheles which is an old art hangout and place artists would get together and work on their art. Martin Reiter, who was very involved with Tacheles, talked to us about the history of Tacheles and what role it played for traveling artists. It was closed down in September after many attempts to try to keep it open. But, they didn’t have the money to keep the building in shape. Even though it’s closed, we were able to walk by it in Berlin and see some work done by artists throughout the years on the outside of the building.
Computerspiele Museum
We also went to the Computers Spiele Museum, which has many different video games throughout the years and shows some history on the innovation of that technology. I found it very fascinating to see different video game technologies and I have always been a Nintendo girl so it was very interesting to see some of the earlier systems. We also got to see the different accessories and types of controllers. I played a game many times until I won it. There was a triangle of lights and when you hit one all of the “matchsticks” in the row to the right of it go out. You want to be the last one to get one out. It was very tricky, but I figured out the computer’s moves and eventually figured out how to win.
Kapoor Museum—Contemporary Art
The museum of Kapoor’s artwork is very interesting. At first I was uncertain what to think of it, but I eventually found it to be fascinating. I especially liked watching the red wax cannon firing and seeing all of the red wax forming a shape together. Also, the mirrors that distort your image and don’t show reality were neat to see. It’s an interesting concept since what we may think is reality isn’t really what is all the time.
