NMD Courses

NMD 100

In NMD 100 I learned many basic concepts of New Media between the lecture and the lab. I learned about different theories in the lecture. In the lab I learned how to use DSLR cameras, audio recorders, and worked with iMovie. For the final group project, we had to portray a cultural shift in a type of media. In my group we related different topics that we are interested in to graphic design. We all showed how graphic design is going to be more interactive. Our screencasts show how it will impact technology, sports, film, and advertisements. In my screencast project I showed how graphic design in relation to advertisements will change over the years. Also, in the lab part of the class, I created a website with all of the work we created over the semester.

NMD 102

In NMD 102, we learned a variety of skills within interactive design. We used Scratch, Alice, and Unity to design different games. It was interesting to learn the different programs. In the program Unity for a group project, we created a game called The Island. As a class we experimented with Max and Arduino boards, which I used as part of my final project. For extra credit I wrote a research paper about Augmented Reality which I find to be an interesting subject and something that will be a big part of the future.

NMD 104

In NMD 104, I gained skills in a variety of the Adobe programs including Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, and InDesign. We did many different projects in the lab to increase our skills in these programs including designing logos, creating a short video, and designing a tutorial app. I used Premiere for the first time in this class and worked on my video skills. I created a video about getting ready for the gym. For my final project in this class I created a tutorial magazine on how to use clipping masks in Photoshop.

NMD 150

In Script Your World, I learned about Javascript. We started out with the basics and thinking about the basic steps in processes, like how an apple peeler works. Then we got into learning more code and designing a game for a project. I decided to create the Game of War. It was a new experience having to think about all the little parts that make up the whole game, and how a lot of work goes into designing it.

NMD 200

In NMD 200, we learned about new media strategies and how to use them within group projects. For a project in this class I worked with a group as the UMaine Motivators. We wanted to figure out how to motivate everyone in some way the best we could. We targeted the UMaine campus and worked through the semester designing a chalkboard wall for students to answer a question “What is your greatest fear?”. We got many interesting responses and it helped people to really think about what they are truly afraid of whether it be failure, the future, or spiders.

Contagious Media

In this class I learned about many different ways to spread media to go viral. We learned about memes, crowdsourcing, and researched key ways to get a meme to go viral. I definitely got a new look into social media and learned key ways to get my posts and information more recognized on the Internet.I learned about creating a cycle to plan how to spread a meme to go viral. Including payload, circulation, direction, vectors, hooks, and recognition. For my meme, I designed an image to be spread to promote the new NMD Tutorials. I posted the image on Twitter to spread it.

International Perspectives on New Media

This class was a life changing experience! My eyes were opened to so many different possibilities for my future career. As a class we went to Prague, Berlin, Paris, and London for two weeks in October. We got to meet people in Europe who are involved with different new media projects and got to see what can be done with new media. In London I most enjoyed when we meet Ryan and Francesca who created the company Cute Circuit. It was very exciting to learn about the wearable technology they have designed. I wrote an article about my experience on this trip and it is on the New Media department’s website.
